Chennai: The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, inaugurated the two-day International Symposium on Advancements in Marine Renewable Energy (ISAMRE 2025) in Chennai on Monday.

Dr. V.K. Saraswat, Member, NITI Aayog, and noted missile scientist, inaugurated the event, highlighting India's vast potential in marine renewable energy. He emphasized that with a 7,500 km coastline and 2.02 million sq km Exclusive Economic Zone, the country has significant scope for offshore wind, wave, and floating solar power generation, fostering employment and reducing carbon emissions. He projected 22.8% growth in the sector between 2023 and 2032.

Dr. Saraswat handed over sea-water fueled lanterns, developed by NIOT scientist Dr. Purnima Jalihal, to authorities from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep, along with a navigational buoy for Kamarajar Port.

The symposium features expert talks, technical sessions, lab visits, and competitions, encouraging innovation in ocean energy. NIOT is also hosting poster and drawing contests for students.

NIOT Director Dr. Balaji Ramakrishnan, Dr. Jalihal, researchers, and policymakers attended the inaugural session.

The event concludes on March 18.
