New Delhi: More than one lakh employees have been laid off worldwide by leading information technology (IT) companies so far this year as part of large-scale cost-cutting measures, according to data from the tracking portal Layoffs.fyi.

As many as 218 tech firms have collectively retrenched around 1,12,700 employees in the first ten months of 2025, with further job cuts expected in the coming months. The trend reflects the sector's ongoing efforts to restructure operations amid the growing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and a global economic slowdown.

Major companies including Amazon, Intel and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) are among those reported to have reduced their workforce in recent rounds of layoffs. Industry sources indicated that mid-level managers and senior executives have been disproportionately affected as firms prioritise automation and digital transformation.

Analysts say the move underscores a shift in resource allocation, with IT giants diverting spending from human resources to emerging technologies such as AI, machine learning and cloud computing. The trend is expected to continue through 2026 as companies streamline operations to enhance efficiency and profitability.
