Chandigarh: The Panjab University on Tuesday evening withdrew its controversial “no-protest affidavit” requirement for first-year students, prompting protesters to call off their seven-day-long agitation.

Abhishek Dagar, general secretary of the Panjab University Campus Students' Council, also ended his seven-day hunger strike, calling it “a victory for every student of PU.”

Students had opposed the affidavit, saying it would restrict their right to organise or participate in campus protests.

In a statement, the university said the students' agitation was called off following its decision to withdraw the affidavit/undertaking for students enrolled in first-year courses or programmes for the 2025-26 session.

PU authorities said the issue was resolved in the larger interest of students to ensure academic activities continue smoothly. The protesting students have also agreed to withdraw their legal case on the matter, it added.

The university reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a constructive academic environment and to encouraging open dialogue while respecting diverse views.

Students had launched an indefinite strike last week, terming the affidavit “undemocratic” and contrary to their rights to peaceful expression.
