Chennai: The Tamil Nadu School Education Department has issued a directive prohibiting teachers from using negative or discouraging words towards students, particularly those struggling with academics.
The order, aimed at improving the learning experience in government schools, emphasizes that teachers should not isolate or reprimand students who lack interest in studies or talent competitions. Instead, they must focus on remedial measures to enhance students' skills.
For students up to Class 5 who lag in basic learning, teachers have been instructed to implement the Numeracy and Writing Programme effectively. Those teaching Classes 6 to 9 must ensure pupils develop proficiency in reading, writing and speaking in Tamil and English, and in understanding mathematics concepts.
The department has also called for enthusiastic implementation of the Targeted Help for Improving Remediation and Academic Nurturing (THIRAN) scheme to boost academic performance. Headmasters have been asked to monitor the progress of underperforming students, guide teachers on corrective measures, and keep parents informed. Weekly tests must be conducted, and results uploaded on the Education Management Information System (EMIS) portal.
Teachers have been warned against public criticism or scolding of students, stressing that exams should be conducted fairly and positive reinforcement—such as awarding stars or applause—should be encouraged.
The order has triggered mixed reactions among teachers, some questioning whether avoiding harsh language alone will improve academic performance and what alternatives could replace conventional disciplinary words.
