Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Friday released the State Education Policy (SEP), reiterating his government's strong opposition to the National Education Policy (NEP) of the Centre.

The policy, unveiled at the Anna Centenary Library Auditorium here, was drafted by a committee headed by retired High Court judge Justice D Murugesan and submitted to the state government in 2024.

The DMK-led government has consistently refused to implement the NEP, terming it “against social justice” and an attempt to impose Hindi. In May this year, the state approached the Supreme Court alleging the Centre had withheld around Rs 2,200 crore in education funds due to Tamil Nadu's non-adoption of the NEP.

In its plea, the government sought the release of Rs 2,291.30 crore and 6 per cent annual interest on Rs 2,151.59 crore from May 1 until payment, besides timely disbursement of the Centre's 60 per cent share of grants under the Right to Education Act.

The petition contended that funds under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme had been unlawfully linked to the NEP and the PM SHRI Schools Scheme, despite being separate programmes. Tamil Nadu has also objected to Clause 4.13 of NEP-2020, which proposes a three-language formula.

Justice Murugesan's panel framed the SEP to suit the state's socio-cultural and linguistic context, officials said.

The policy's details were not immediately disclosed.
