Chennai: The University Grants Commission has cautioned that several institutions are issuing fake degrees in violation of norms, and such qualifications will not be recognised for higher education or employment purposes.

In a statement, the commission said only universities established under Central, State or Provincial Acts, or institutions recognised under the UGC Act, 1956, are authorised to award degrees.

However, based on inputs received, some institutions are reportedly offering degrees in contravention of UGC regulations. Degrees issued by such entities are invalid and will not be accepted for academic or job-related purposes, it said.

The UGC advised students and parents to verify the recognition status of institutions on its official website before seeking admission.

It also urged the public to report institutions running unauthorised courses in violation of the UGC Act via email at ugcampc@gmail.com, the statement added.
