Colaba Research Centre to Digitize Over 180 Years of Geomagnetic Data
delhi: the colaba research centre of the indian institute of geomagnetism (iig) was inaugurated by dst secretary prof. abhay karandikar. the historic observatory, established in 1841, has continuously documented geomagnetic field variations and major storms, including the carrington event of 1859.the centre will digitize its extensive archives using modern techniques, offering insights into historical geomagnetic storms. this data will aid in predicting future storm probabilities and understanding space weather impacts.preserving records through magnetograms, microfilms, and volumes, the observatory is renowned for the globally utilized moos volume, compiled by its first indian director, dr. nanabhoy moos.iig, founded in 1971, focuses on geomagnetism, space physics, and atmospheric studies, operating 13 observatories nationwide. its research supports space weather forecasting and environmental monitoring. director prof. a.p. dimri emphasized iig's interdisciplinary studies on earth's magnetic shield and related phenomena.
