CUTN scholar develops innovative colour-changing glasses

chennai: in a major breakthrough in materials science, dr. srinivasan sampath, assistant professor, and research scholar ms. navya pv from the central university of tamil nadu (cutn) have invented a novel class of colour-changing glasses.these advanced glasses, made from “tetra benzo fluorene,” shift colours at the flip of a switch, transitioning from clear to hues like blue, purple, yellow, orange, and green. their multifunctionality extends to uv and infrared protection, energy efficiency, and even battery monitoring.designed for use in architecture and automobiles, these glasses can serve as smart windows, reducing glare in vehicle mirrors for safer nighttime driving. they also function as personal cooling glasses and supercapacitors, offering an eco-friendly energy storage solution.a standout feature is their ability to visually indicate battery charge levels by changing colour, simplifying energy management in various devices.this pioneering research has been published in advanced functional materials, a high-impact journal (18.5). the department of materials science at cutn continues to explore advancements in nanotechnology, solar cells, and batteries, reinforcing its role in cutting-edge research.
