Early childhood trauma linked to obesity risk, but positive experiences can help reverse it

auckland: children exposed to trauma early in life face a heightened risk of obesity, but research shows that fostering positive experiences can mitigate this risk. a study of nearly 5,000 children in new zealand revealed that 87% encountered at least one traumatic event by age eight, with 32% experiencing three or more. adverse experiences, including abuse, bullying, domestic violence, and parental challenges like substance abuse, strongly correlated with obesity risk.children with one adverse experience were twice as likely to be obese by age eight, while those with four or more were nearly three times as likely. the study highlighted the impact of stress-related behaviors such as unhealthy eating, poor sleep, and inactivity.however, positive experiences significantly reduced obesity risk. factors like engaged parenting, structured routines, enriching activities, and effective early education provided protective effects. children with at least four positive experiences were 60% less likely to be obese.the findings underline the need for holistic approaches to childhood obesity. interventions should address trauma and promote nurturing environments. schools, families, and policymakers must prioritize mental health services, trauma-informed care, and community programs to foster resilience. supporting children's emotional well-being ensures healthier futures.
