chennai: germany has solidified its status as a leading destination for indian students seeking higher education abroad. for the second consecutive year, indian nationals constitute the largest group of foreign students in germany, with nearly 50,000 enrolled in the 2023-2024 winter semester, marking a 15.1% increase from the previous year, according to the federal statistical office of germany.over the past five years, the number of indian students studying in germany has more than doubled, primarily pursuing degrees in engineering, which accounts for 60% of their enrollment. other popular fields include law, management, and social studies (21%), and mathematics and natural sciences (13%). enrollment is split between universities (56%) and universities of applied sciences (44%), the latter focusing on applied research and maintaining strong ties with regional and international companies, enhancing job prospects for graduates.germany's public universities typically do not charge tuition fees for both domestic and international students, requiring only a nominal semester fee. however, prospective students should note changes to visa requirements effective september 2024. the proof of income requirement has increased from €934 to €992 per month, totaling €11,904 annually, in addition to covering living expenses and other costs.international students on study visas can work up to 140 full days or 280 half-days per year without prior approval, with no restrictions during semester breaks.
