CSIR-SERC conducts load testing of MRTS bridge in Chennai

chennai: the csir-structural engineering research centre (csir-serc), chennai, has undertaken instrumentation and load testing of bridge structures along the mass rapid transit system (mrts) corridor between velachery and st. thomas mount.the project, commissioned by southern railway, aims to verify the performance and safety of the elevated corridor before its scheduled commissioning. the testing is being carried out by the structural health monitoring laboratory of csir-serc following guidelines from the research designs and standards organisation (rdso) and indian railways.each span is equipped with advanced sensors and high-speed data acquisition systems to measure the bridge's structural response under static and dynamic load conditions using a standard test train. the collected data will help ensure that the bridges meet all safety and performance requirements.the field tests were coordinated by dr. voggu srinivas, chief scientist and head, shm laboratory, along with dr. ing saptarshi sasmal and dr. b. arun sundaram. senior officials from southern railway also witnessed the tests.csir-serc said the exercise reinforces its role in ensuring reliable, safe, and sustainable infrastructure through advanced structural engineering research.
