DRDO saved Rs 2.64 lakh crore through indigenous innovations in five years: Panel

new delhi: the centre has lauded the defence research and development organisation (drdo) for saving over rs 2.64 lakh crore during the last five years through indigenous research, development and production, according to a report of the parliamentary standing committee on defence.the committee said drdo has made significant strides in developing next-generation defence technologies, including hypersonic systems and advanced missile capabilities, substantially enhancing india's strategic preparedness and self-reliance in defence.“as a result of sustained research and indigenous production over the past five years, drdo has contributed to savings amounting to rs 2,64,156 crore,” the report noted, while expressing confidence that the organisation's achievements would continue to strengthen the country's defence ecosystem.highlighting key milestones, the panel referred to the successful test of a long-range hypersonic anti-ship missile in november 2024. it also noted successful trials related to advanced ballistic missile technologies, including systems capable of striking multiple targets.the committee said several other critical tests and developmental programmes were completed successfully during the period, reflecting drdo's growing technological maturity and innovation capacity.the report added that drdo's progress aligns with the government's emphasis on 'atmanirbhar bharat' in the defence sector, reducing dependence on imports and promoting domestic defence manufacturing.the panel recommended continued support and adequate funding for drdo to further accelerate indigenous defence technology development.
