IIT Madras launches Zero e-mission to accelerate Indias EV transition

chennai: the indian institute of technology madras (iit madras) on monday launched 'zero e-mission', a set of e-mobility initiatives aimed at advancing electric vehicle (ev) research, education, and industry collaboration.led by the department of engineering design, the initiative includes state-of-the-art research facilities such as an ev battery engineering lab, a battery charging infrastructure laboratory, and an electric commercial vehicle analytics centre. iit madras also introduced a 100-hour online certificate programme on e-mobility and a web-enabled m.tech in e-mobility for working professionals.the launch event was attended by dr. hanif qureshi, additional secretary, ministry of heavy industries, government of india, along with senior officials, industry representatives, and faculty members.speaking at the event, iit madras director prof. v. kamakoti said, “we have been working on this for four years, consolidating our expertise to support industry and government in ev adoption.”dr. qureshi lauded the initiative, emphasizing the government's commitment to rapid road transport electrification.a technical report on the safe electrification of battery electric trucks was also released, assessing risks such as thermal runaway and fire hazards. additionally, iit madras' centre of excellence for zero emission trucking (coezet), in collaboration with rle india and rle futuremotiv uk, released an fmea study to enhance battery electric truck safety.the initiative aligns with india's push for sustainable transportation and energy security, contributing to the nation's net-zero ambitions.
