MK university suspends UG programs; students perplexed
madurai: madurai kamaraj university has abruptly suspended its direct undergraduate (ug) courses, leaving thousands of students who had applied and paid fees in a state of shock and uncertainty.two years ago, the university introduced seven direct ug courses - b.sc. mathematics, psychology, computer science (data science), b.a. tamil, english, b.com, and b.voc - under the leadership of the former vice-chancellor kumar. despite concerns about the lack of infrastructure, including teachers, classrooms, and laboratories, the courses were launched.there was strong opposition from the senate and academic council, over existing financial burden the university and should focus on strengthening its research capabilities instead.however, classrooms were allocated, and additional honorary lecturers were appointed to support the ug programs.despite these efforts, vice-chancellor kumar resigned, and the university is now being led by a convenor committee headed by collegiate education director karmegam. more than a thousand students had applied for the ug courses this year, eagerly awaiting their admissions and the start of their first-year classes.without any prior notification, the university abruptly halted the first-year admissions, citing financial constraints. this decision, although seen as necessary by some professors, left 1,642 students who had already paid their fees scrambling for other options. students were advised to seek admission at university college on alagarkoil road, madurai. however, concerns about accommodation and the already completed admission process in other colleges have left both students and parents stressed and uncertain about their academic future.
