NCERT pulls Class 8 textbook from website amid row over judiciary chapter

new delhi: the ncert has withdrawn a class 8 social science textbook from its website following objections over a chapter discussing corruption in the judiciary, with sources indicating that controversial portions may also be removed from printed copies.the development came after a three-judge bench of the supreme court, led by chief justice of india surya kant, took suo motu cognisance of the content and objected to references seen as undermining the judiciary's integrity.the textbook cited corruption, case backlog and shortage of judges among challenges faced by the judicial system. it also included data on pending cases and complaints received through official grievance mechanisms, and quoted former cji b r gavai on the impact of corruption on public trust.sources said ncert has convened an internal review meeting involving subject experts and officials who approved the chapter. government functionaries noted that while corruption is a broader institutional issue, the textbook should not have focused on a single organ of governance.schools said they have not yet received any directive regarding teaching the chapter. meanwhile, bar associations have raised concerns and referred the matter to the law ministry.
