NIT Rourkela develops patented system to detect intruders using gait patterns

new delhi: researchers at the national institute of technology (nit), rourkela have secured a patent for an automated system that detects intruders in restricted areas by analysing their walking patterns, officials said on wednesday.the system, titled “unauthorised person detection using thermal imaging and gait recognition for intra-building security”, uses thermal imaging and gait recognition to identify and track individuals in large and complex environments.professor samit ari from the department of electronics and communication engineering said conventional cctv-based surveillance requires extensive manual monitoring and is prone to errors, especially under poor lighting or occlusions.the new system uses thermal cameras to distinguish humans from the background and operate effectively in low-light conditions. it identifies individuals based on their unique gait and compares it with authorised data.if no match is found, the system flags the person as suspicious and alerts security. it also tracks movement across multiple checkpoints and maintains temporary records for unknown individuals.developed at a cost of about rs 1.9 lakh, the system can be deployed in campuses, corporate offices, defence and high-security installations for enhanced surveillance and faster threat detection.
