Sydney Harbour Bridge

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is an iconic steel arch bridge spanning Sydney Harbour, connecting the city's central business district with the North Shore. Known as “The Coathanger” for its arch-based design, the bridge was constructed between 1924 and 1932, officially opening on March 19, 1932. Designed and built by the British firm Dorman Long & Co., with the direction of engineer John Bradfield, it stands 134m high and stretches 1,149m in length, making it one of the world's largest and tallest steel arch bridges. The bridge features rail, highway, bicycle, and pedestrian paths, and is acclaimed for its innovative engineering, including construction techniques that allowed its huge arch to be built outward from both shores, meeting perfectly in the center. Its four granite-faced pylons, at each end of the arch, were added for visual balance and now serve various functions including a museum and lookout. The bridge used over 52,000 tons of steel and more than 6,000,000 rivets in its construction. Today, it is both a symbol of Australian engineering achievement and a global landmark, offering spectacular views of the harbour and hosting the famous BridgeClimb experience for visitors.
