Matha Kali Temple, Scarborough

Scarborough is a Tamil-majority area in Toronto, Canada. The Matha Kali Temple is an important place of worship for Hindu devotees. The Tamils of Scarborough wanted to continue their tradition and faith and started the construction of this temple in the 1990s. Dedicated to Goddess Kali, this temple is a spiritual beacon, especially for the Tamil community. Kali is considered to be the most vibrant form of power and the destroyer of evil. The main deity of this temple is a dark-skinned Goddess Kali, beautifully adorned. The intense gaze in the eyes of the goddess inspires devotion and protection in the minds of devotees. Special pujas are held on the days of Pradosham, Amavasya, Pournami and Ashtami. Every Friday, the goddess is specially decorated with flowers like mullai and sambhakam. The community is also served through annadanam and social events. Aadi Kali Utsavam, Navaratri festival, Diwali etc. are celebrated in a grand manner. Hundreds of devotees participate in these festivals and enjoy programs like Maha Deeparathanai, Parivar Deivaar Pooja, music and traditional dance. The temple also contributes greatly to the community beyond spiritual matters. Tamil language classes, green sapling planting, youth free thinking trainings, blood donation camps etc. are organized on behalf of the temple.
