Chennai: Education Minister Mahesh announced a significant reduction in the school dropout rate, attributing it to the increased student interest in sports and arts.

As part of a major initiative, the government is establishing 22,931 smart classrooms across government schools, a project that began in June of the previous year. The milestone 22,931st smart classroom was inaugurated yesterday at Duraipakkam Government Higher Secondary School in Chennai.

Minister Mahesh stated during the inauguration: "This project was rolled out last year in the first phase across districts such as Villupuram, Ariyalur, and Thiruvarur. With the completion of the 22,931st smart classroom at this school, we have met our target. The project, valued at Rs. 455.32 crore, has directly benefitted 11.76 lakh students."

In addition to the smart classrooms, the installation of 8,209 high-tech laboratories is nearing completion. With a budget of Rs. 519.73 crore, this project will benefit 43.89 lakh students.

The Minister highlighted that the school education department has successfully introduced world-class science education for teachers, with lessons being conducted in rural areas through both video and audio formats.

Reflecting on progress, he noted a sharp decrease in the dropout rate from 16% in 2014 to less than 5% in 2024. "We have fostered a non-stressful environment that encourages interest in sports, arts, and other subjects. This change has contributed to the decline in dropout rates," he said.

On a different note, Minister Mahesh responded to the Governor's statements regarding schools: "The Governor's remarks are constantly shifting. One day he praises the Tamil Nadu government, the next he takes a different stance. It's unclear whether his views are influenced by external pressures or whether he is unsure about the appropriate timing for ceremonial events like playing Tamil Thai Vaazthu or the national anthem," the Minister said.
