Chennai: Justice S. Nagamuthu, former Madras High Court Judge and Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court, stressed the importance of speedy trials during a media workshop at Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University. Organized by the Press Information Office, the event aimed to educate journalists about new criminal laws effective July 1, 2024, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshaya Adhiniyam 2023.

Justice Nagamuthu highlighted journalists' role in responsibly reporting these changes and protecting sexual assault victims' identities. He explained that cases registered before July 1 will follow old laws, while new registrations will adhere to the updated statutes, which include community service and reduced sentences for certain crimes.

Dr. Gowri Ramesh and Shri M. Annadurai emphasized the importance of these legal updates and the media's role in accurately conveying them. The workshop saw participation from law professionals and students.
