Need for Environmental knowledge among students

A 2022 United Nations study found that 70% of students lack awareness of climate change, highlighting the insufficient emphasis on climate education. To address this, the UN recommends integrating key aspects such as climate science, ecology and biodiversity, climate justice, a decarbonized economy, and sustainable lifestyles into curricula.
The UN has set a goal for 2030, urging that 90% of education policies worldwide adopt an ecological approach and that at least 50% of schools implement green initiatives.
Enhancing Climate Education
With increasing environmental crises—such as heavy rains, landslides, droughts, wildfires, and disease outbreaks—climate literacy is crucial. Education should be locally relevant, incorporating knowledge about native plants, animals, social structures, and cultures to better engage students.
Encouraging students to maintain journals documenting environmental issues they observe daily can spark discussions and awareness. Storytelling, experiential learning, and organizing public awareness programs at ecologically significant sites—such as museums, parks, and water bodies—can further enhance their understanding. Involving students in teaching initiatives strengthens their grasp of the subject, while games and competitions can reinforce learning.
Role of Environmental Forums
School-based environmental forums play a vital role in spreading climate awareness. These forums act as a bridge between schools and communities, fostering collective action.
Introducing young children, such as those in Anganwadis, to activities like tree planting and wildlife visits nurtures their connection with nature from an early age. For primary school students, lessons on the interrelationship between the environment, society, and economy can be introduced. Middle school students can explore topics such as ecological justice and sustainable development, while high school students can participate in actionable projects.
The Green School Initiative in Tamil Nadu
In Tamil Nadu, the Green School Scheme, launched in 2023, promotes eco-friendly practices like vegetable gardening, water conservation, and plastic reduction in schools. Effective implementation requires designated coordinators and the formation of ecology councils comprising teachers and students.
Regular assessments should be conducted, and well-structured action plans should be developed to ensure meaningful progress.
