Chennai: A 95-year-old patient has successfully undergone a high-risk angioplasty at PROMED Hospital, Chennai, marking a rare milestone in geriatric cardiac care in Asia.
The patient whose name wasn't mentioned was admitted following a severe myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), complicated by age, high blood pressure, anemia, and a prior stroke.
The cardiology team, led by Dr. Arun Kalyanasundaram, performed a complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) using an Impella CP heart pump for support and Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) for precise stent placement.
Drug-eluting stents were deployed in the right coronary and left main arteries, while drug-eluting balloons cleared blockages in the posterior left ventricle and lateral coronary artery. The procedure was completed without complications, and the patient has fully recovered, resuming normal daily activities.
Dr. Kalyanasundaram said, “Meticulous planning and teamwork were key to success. This demonstrates that advanced cardiac care can be safely extended to elderly high-risk patients.”
Dr. Spurthy Arun, Founder and MD, added, “Technology, expertise, and compassionate care at Promed make such high-risk interventions possible.”
Mr. S expressed gratitude, saying, “The doctors have given me my life back.”
PROMED Hospital is a technology-driven, patient-centric cardiac care, setting new benchmarks in geriatric cardiology in India.
