Port Blair: The Regional Ayurveda Research Institute (RARI), Andaman & Nicobar Islands, under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), on Wednesday highlighted India's growing global leadership in traditional medicine ahead of the 2nd WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine, to be held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from December 17 to 19.
Addressing a press conference at the Sri Vijaya Puram campus, CCRAS officials — Dr. Harjeet Singh (Research Officer - Pharmacognosy), Dr. Akashlal M. (Research Officer - Ayurveda) and Jishin Prakash T.S. (Research Assistant - Botany) — said India's traditional medicine systems have gained significant global recognition, particularly after their proven efficacy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Singh recalled that the first WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine held in Ahmedabad in 2023 showcased India's evidence-based Ayurvedic practices, which received strong appreciation from international health experts. He said the positive response has strengthened WHO's partnership with India, resulting in the second summit being hosted in New Delhi.
He said the upcoming summit will feature an AYUSH Expo, field visits, exhibitions, and demonstrations of digital tools, artificial intelligence and innovations in Ayurveda. The three-day event will include plenary sessions, scientific discussions, cultural programmes and a special global event on Ashwagandha.
The summit is expected to draw delegations from 79 countries, with participation from over 100 nations, including 500 virtual attendees. Around 50 representatives from 20 countries will also hold bilateral discussions with the Union Health Ministry, he added.
