Jalgaon (Maharashtra): Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Nikhil Khadse on Sunday inaugurated the Khelo India ASMITA Football League 2025-26 at the Godavari Engineering College Ground here, calling it a significant affirmative action measure to increase women's participation in sports.
The league, part of the Khelo Bharat Niti, is aimed at identifying and nurturing grassroots football talent among girls, particularly from tribal and minority communities. It seeks to provide opportunities for aspiring players aged 13 and under, from first-time participants to those with hidden potential.
“This league isn't just about sports; it's about breaking barriers,” Khadse said at the opening ceremony. She described it as a platform “where passion turns into performance” and a step towards empowerment by bringing marginalised women players into the spotlight. The initiative, she added, reflects the government's philosophy of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.
The programme aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of making India a global sporting powerhouse, with women playing a central role. Organisers said the league addresses historical imbalances in sports, challenges stereotypes, and aims to create new role models.
The inauguration was attended by Ketakitai Patil, Jalgaon District Football Association secretary Farukh Shaikh, and members of the Godavari Engineering College administration. The event was held under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, with support from the Sports Authority of India (SAI), the All India Football Federation (AIFF), and the Western India Football Association (WIFA).
