Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu government is implementing the Reading Movement project in state-run schools with the objective of fostering reading habits among students, officials said.

As part of the initiative, storytelling sessions and reading competitions are being held in schools to make reading a more engaging and enjoyable experience.

“Textbooks cannot show the entire world; they are only a window,” said educationist Lenin Bharathi. “They provide introductions and key scientific concepts to children. Reading is the foundation for developing age-appropriate knowledge in subjects such as history, science, language, geography, and social science,” he added.

The project is aimed at enhancing students' language skills and expanding their general awareness through sustained reading practices, officials added.
