Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday distributed laptops to 136 Adi Dravidar and Tribal students who secured admission to higher education institutions in the state.

Calling the event “heart-warming,” Stalin said this was his first public function after being discharged from hospital on July 27. The Chief Minister was admitted on July 21 following a bout of giddiness during his morning walk.

“Hearing about their educational journey — rising from extremely disadvantaged families that faced hardship — and their dedication to education moved my heart and brought tears to my eyes,” Stalin said in a post on social media platform 'X', extending his best wishes to the students.

The Chief Minister is scheduled to launch the government's flagship health initiative, 'Nalam Kakkum Stalin', at St. Bede's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School in Mylapore on August 2.

State Health Minister Ma Subramanian, who inspected preparations for the launch, said the scheme aims to provide comprehensive health check-ups, thereby reducing the need for costly full-body examinations at hospitals.

“I request the people in all districts to participate. About 1,256 health camps will be conducted across Tamil Nadu every Saturday,” Stalin said on 'X', adding that test results will be sent to participants via SMS.

Medical reports will include results of tests such as blood work, ECG, X-ray, ultrasound, and breast cancer screening. The scheme will also cover consultations and treatment across various specialisations including orthopaedics, cardiology, gynaecology, paediatrics, dermatology, neurology, psychiatry, and more. Indian systems of medicine will also be integrated into the programme.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister also inaugurated two office buildings for the State Tax Department built at a cost of ₹4.35 crore by the Commercial Tax Department. Additionally, 12 Sub-Registrar office buildings constructed by the Registration Department at a cost of ₹22.69 crore, and two new Sub-Registrar offices at Navalur and Kelambakkam in Chengalpattu Registration District, were also inaugurated.
