NCERT proposes to include classes IX marks too for XII board results

new delhi: the national council of educational research and training (ncert) has proposed a new assessment system for class 12 board exams, incorporating students' performance from classes 9 to 11. this proposal, part of a report titled "establishing equivalence across education boards," suggests distributing the class 12 board marks as follows: 15% from class 9, 20% from class 10, 25% from class 11, and the remaining 40% from class 12.the report, submitted by parakh, a regulatory body under ncert, to the ministry of education in july 2024, calls for standardization across all educational boards in india. it also recommends a greater focus on vocational and skill-based training, making subjects like data management, coding, ai, music, arts, and crafts compulsory. this aligns with the national education policy 2020 (nep 2020) goal of fostering holistic learning.the new system would combine formative assessments—like self-reflection, student portfolios, and projects—with traditional summative assessments. additionally, the report suggests introducing a credit-based learning system, where students must earn specific credits across different subjects and supplementary activities.the proposal also highlights the need for improving school infrastructure and assessing teacher performance to ensure quality education nationwide.
