After total shutdown call by students, Panjab University to remain shut today
chandigarh: after protesting students demanding the announcement of senate polls called for a complete shutdown of panjab university on november 26, the university declared a holiday on wednesday.all teaching, non-teaching and office work on campus will remain suspended. examinations scheduled at centres chd40, chd41, chd43 and chd44 have been postponed and shifted to dav college, sector 10. fresh dates will be announced later, the university said.earlier, the authorities had said november 26 would be a working day, directing teachers and department heads to remain present from 9 am to 5 pm.vice-chancellor renu vig urged faculty members to counsel students who might attempt to disrupt exams, stating that while protesters have the right to dissent, others have an equal right to appear for exams without obstruction.students under the panjab university bachao morcha banner called for a complete shutdown to press for a senate poll schedule, warning that they would close gates 1 and 2. on november 10, a massive protest saw agitators storming entry gates and clashing with security personnel.the protests began over the centre's decision to restructure the university's senate and syndicate. the ministry of education withdrew its october 28 notification on november 7 after pressure from political leaders and students. however, students have continued their agitation, seeking immediate senate election dates, pending for more than a year.student representatives met the vice-chancellor, who said the schedule had been sent to the chancellor for approval. students maintained that the protest would continue until the senate poll dates are announced.several political parties and farmers' bodies, including aap, sad, congress, samyukta kisan morcha, skm (non-political) and kisan mazdoor sangharsh morcha, extended support to the agitation.
