Enforce law on private schools to curtail fee hike

the state government plans to enact legislation in the assembly this year making it mandatory for all private schools to follow the government fee structure.    a senior official in the department of school education said there were complaints from parents that many private schools were collecting exorbitant fees, particularly some top schools in the city. 'in fact, when we meet parents whose children study in private schools the first point they will raise is the tuition fee issue, but as there was no proper procedure in the state to take action against these schools, we did not do anything,' the official said. education minister thangam thennarasu was keen on providing quality education, affordable to all sections of society, 'the minister has formed a two-member committee with mr vijaykumar and director of matriculation schools,' mr p.mani, to review various judgments issued by the supreme court about fixation of fees for selffinancing institutions. the apex court had issued a verdict for self-financing professional colleges that the state should set up a permanent committee for fee fixation, so based on that judgment our state government may also come out with such an idea, for which it will enact a legislation in the assembly soon, the official said. the two-member committee is expected to submit its report to the school education minister within a week for the government to take a decision accordingly.
