Ministers remark on IIT Bombays name shows govts mindset: Raj Thackeray

mumbai: maharashtra navnirman sena (mns) chief raj thackeray on wednesday said union minister of state for science and technology jitendra singh's remark on not renaming iit bombay as iit mumbai reflects the government's mindset.addressing an event at iit bombay on monday, singh had said, “as far as iit bombay is concerned, thank god it still is this name. you have not changed it to mumbai. that's another compliment to you. and also true for madras. it remains iit madras.”reacting to this, thackeray said the minister's statement clearly symbolises the government's thinking.he said attempts to separate mumbai from maharashtra were thwarted by marathi leaders and citizens. “our marathi mumbai remained in maharashtra. now the bitterness that's been festering in their bellies for decades is spilling out again,” thackeray wrote on x.he urged people in mumbai and the entire metropolitan region to “open their eyes”, asserting that the name mumbai “irks” the ruling dispensation because it honours mumbadevi, the city's presiding deity, and her marathi children who have lived here for generations.thackeray alleged the centre earlier tried to “wrest” chandigarh from punjab but retreated briefly after opposition from all parties. he warned that a similar attempt is underway in mumbai.“first mumbai, then the entire mmr region will be seized and linked to gujarat. marathi people should wake up,” he said.mumbai, formerly bombay, was officially renamed in 1995 to honour mumbadevi and shed colonial-era names.
