Chennai: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Southern Regional Office, commenced a two-day residential training programme for its empanelled resource personnel in Chennai on Tuesday.

The initiative, under the “Learning Science via Standards” programme, is being held on May 13 and 14, 2025, and aims to strengthen the delivery of lesson plans that integrate scientific concepts with Indian Standards.

The training brings together around 100 resource persons from eight BIS Branch Offices in the Southern Region.

These individuals, selected for their subject expertise and communication skills, will be equipped to deliver interactive lessons that link science education to real-world applications and industrial standards.

“Learning Science via Standards” is a flagship initiative launched by BIS to help students understand scientific principles through their practical applications in everyday products such as domestic gas stoves, helmets, pressure cookers, tyres, and milk powder. The programme aligns closely with school curricula and seeks to cultivate an appreciation for quality and standards among students.

During the training, resource persons will engage in detailed discussions on eight selected lesson plans covering pasteurized milk, geo-textiles, footballs, and other commonly used products. Activities and quizzes have been integrated to enhance the interactive nature of the training.

The event was inaugurated by Smt. G. Bhavani, Scientist-F and Head of the BIS Chennai Branch Office, who outlined the programme's objectives. Shri Arun Puchakayala, Scientist-D, elaborated on the concepts and methodology of the initiative.
