chennai: a team of international scientists has discovered 128 new moons orbiting saturn, further solidifying its position as the planet with the most moons in the solar system.researchers from taiwan, canada, the united states, and france made the discovery, which was officially recognized by the international astronomical union (iau) on march 11.the team conducted continuous observations of saturn between 2019 and 2021 using the canada-france-hawaii telescope (cfht). initial findings revealed 62 new moons, with subsequent studies leading to the identification of more. some of these newly detected moons are only a few kilometers in diameter and are believed to be fragments resulting from collisions between larger moons.with this discovery, the total number of saturn's known moons now stands at 274. scientists continue to monitor the planet to deepen their understanding of its dynamic moon system.
