chennai: tamil nadu chief minister m.k. stalin has firmly opposed the ugc's proposed regulations, stating that the state will not remain silent if the autonomy of educational institutions is undermined.the university grants commission (ugc) recently released a draft proposal granting greater authority to governors in forming search committees for vice-chancellor appointments. the regulations also allow the appointment of non-academics to the position of vice-chancellor.ina strong statement, cm stalin condemned the move:"the ugc's proposal to empower governors in vice-chancellor appointments and permit non-academics in these roles is a blatant attack on states' rights and the principle of federalism. this step by the bjp-led central government aims to centralize authority, curbing the powers of democratically elected state governments."he emphasized that education should remain under the control of elected governments and not be dictated by the bjp or governors. stalin highlighted tamil nadu's leadership in higher education and warned that such actions threaten the state's academic autonomy."education is enshrined in the constitution as a vital component of governance. the ugc's arbitrary regulations are an unacceptable violation of this principle. tamil nadu will respond with both legal and political action," stalin asserted.he reiterated that the state would not compromise when it comes to protecting the autonomy of its educational institutions.
