chennai: the tamil nadu government has floated an international tender to procure 20 lakh laptops for distribution to college students over the next two years.the move follows an announcement made in the current state budget, reviving the laptop distribution scheme—this time targeting students in higher education. the scheme, originally launched during the aiadmk regime, provided free laptops to school students until 2019. it was subsequently discontinued after the dmk assumed office.the electronics corporation of tamil nadu (elcot), the state-run agency overseeing the procurement, has now issued a global tender seeking bids for the supply of laptops, marking the rollout of the initiative.officials said the government aims to bridge the digital divide and enhance access to online learning resources through this scheme.
