UGC host conference on implementation of NEP 2020 at IIT Madras

chennai: the university grants commission (ugc) organized a southern zone conference at iit madras, focusing on the implementation of the national education policy (nep) 2020. the event gathered academics from various institutions to explore nep 2020's strategies, covering aspects like the national credit framework, academic bank of credits, digital empowerment, research and innovation ecosystems, and more.ugc chairman prof. m. jagadesh kumar emphasized the importance of “access, equity, and inclusivity in higher education,” advocating for affordable and supportive educational environments. prof. kumar highlighted ugc's efforts to support skill development through platforms like the swayam plus portal, enabling students to gain up to 50% of their credits through skill-based courses, enhancing career readiness.director of iit madras, prof. v. kamakoti, underscored the importance of effective education for india's youth, warning that neglect could impact the nation's future workforce. he stressed the need to cultivate leadership in teaching, governance, and entrepreneurship by 2047, when india marks its 100th independence anniversary.the ugc's guidelines now enable universities to integrate internships and experiential learning, equipping students for real-world challenges. ugc also allowed universities to conduct end-semester exams, reducing students' dependence on external exams and encouraging swayam courses.
