BIS organises POSH training to promote safe workplace environment

chennai: the bureau of indian standards (bis), under the ministry of consumer affairs, food & public distribution, organised a one-day training programme on the prevention of sexual harassment (posh) at the workplace on july 31. the programme, held at the bis southern regional office in chennai, was conducted by the national institute of training for standardization (nits), noida, and attended by employees from the southern regional and chennai branch offices.dr. meenakshi ganesan, scientist-g and deputy director general (southern region), delivered the welcome address, stressing the importance of a harassment-free workplace. “training programmes like these empower employees to uphold dignity, respect and equality,” she said.inher inaugural address, ms. chitra gupta, deputy director general (hallmarking & training), highlighted the significance of the posh act, 2013. she called it a vital instrument to ensure employee safety and inclusivity at the workplace.dr. j. vasanthakumari, the session's expert faculty, covered key aspects of the act, including its history, scope, complaint mechanisms, and the role of internal committees. the training included interactive modules, case studies, and scenario-based discussions.participants were sensitised to different forms of harassment—verbal, non-verbal, physical, and psychological—and educated on their rights and responsibilities under the act.the session concluded with a feedback round, reiterating bis's commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and respectful work culture through awareness and prevention.
