Centre withdraws order restructuring Panjab University Senate, Syndicate
new delhi: the ministry of education on friday rescinded its notification that sought to change the constitution and composition of the senate and syndicate of panjab university, following widespread opposition from political parties in punjab.the centre had earlier notified amendments to the panjab university act, 1947, reducing the size of the senate to 31 members and replacing elections for the syndicate with nominations — a move chief minister bhagwant mann termed “unconstitutional.”“in view of the consultations with various stakeholders, it has been decided that the order changing the constitution and composition of the senate and syndicate shall stand rescinded,” the ministry said.the original order, issued on october 28 based on recommendations of a high-level committee formed in 2021, had triggered strong protests from students, faculty, and political leaders across punjab.the rollback followed a meeting between a delegation of the aam aadmi party and punjab governor gulab chand kataria, who had been urged to withdraw the notification.the punjab bjp welcomed the centre's decision, calling it a step in line with “the sentiments of the people.”
