ISRO launches student outreach programmes to inspire interest in Space Science

new delhi: the indian space research organisation (isro) has launched various educational outreach initiatives to inspire students and the general public about space science and technology, union minister jitendra singh informed the lok sabha on wednesday.ina written reply, singh highlighted that space-based applications play a crucial role in sectors such as agriculture, disaster management, weather forecasting, communication, and navigation, contributing to socio-economic development. to create awareness and encourage the adoption of space technologies, isro conducts exhibitions, lectures, student workshops, online courses, and interactive programs such as the young scientist programme (yuvika) and space on wheels.the success of india's chandrayaan missions has further fueled interest in space science among students. notably, isro's initiatives in uttar pradesh have seen a significant response, with over 700 student registrations for yuvika in 2024 and more than 800 in 2023. additionally, through space tutors, over 5,000 students have been engaged, while the space on wheels bus has reached nearly 10,000 students and members of the public.providing details of the outreach initiatives, the minister said yuvika is a residential programme aimed at students who have completed class 9, offering hands-on training and expert lectures on space science. space tutor, another initiative, allows schools, colleges, and ngos to collaborate with isro for exhibitions and workshops. meanwhile, space on wheels serves as a mobile exhibition, bringing space-themed displays to educational institutions.these programmes aim to nurture scientific curiosity and encourage students to pursue careers in space technology, the minister added.
