Assessment tests begin for slow learners under Thiran scheme

coimbatore: the tamil nadu school education department has commenced monthly assessment tests for slow learners in government schools under the 'thiran' initiative, aimed at improving academic performance in tamil, english, and mathematics.the programme identifies students who are lagging in core subjects and provides them with dedicated 90-minute classes for each subject. classes are conducted in a rotational manner by teachers over a month-long period.according to officials, the first tamil assessment test has already been conducted, with english scheduled for august 28 and mathematics on august 29. weekly evaluation tests are also held to monitor progress.the department has instructed that after completing 30 days of separate training, students should rejoin regular classes alongside their peers. however, no official guidelines have yet been issued regarding the continuation of separate classes for students who continue to lag after the monthly assessment.the 'skills movement' scheme is part of the state's broader effort to provide targeted academic support, strengthen foundational learning, and reduce educational gaps in government schools.officials said the initiative combines remedial teaching with regular monitoring to ensure that students achieve expected learning outcomes. teachers have been advised to closely track the performance of each student and provide necessary support without stigmatizing slow learners.
