new delhi: google ceo sundar pichai has raised concerns over the rising use of ai for fraudulent practices during online job interviews and announced that the company will reintroduce in-person interviews for technical positions.speaking on the issue, pichai said, “from now on, candidates applying for engineering and programming roles at google will be called for at least one in-person interview. this step is aimed at ensuring that applicants possess a fundamental understanding of computer science.”with many us-based companies relying on online recruitment processes, incidents of candidates using ai tools to manipulate coding tests and interview responses have become increasingly common. while candidates may demonstrate strong skills online, their on-the-job performance often falls short, creating challenges for employers.pichai noted that ai-assisted cheating has made it difficult for companies to accurately assess a candidate's abilities. “online tools are being misused to answer questions automatically while keeping cameras on,” he said, highlighting the growing concern over the authenticity of online assessments.a recent study indicates that over 50 percent of candidates resort to ai to gain an advantage in online interviews.google's move reflects a broader trend in the corporate sector, with companies such as amazon, cisco, deloitte, and mckinsey also shifting back to in-person interview formats to better evaluate technical expertise and prevent fraudulent practices.
