JIPMER hosts CME and workshop on clubfoot management

puducherry: the department of orthopaedics at jipmer, puducherry, organised a continuing medical education (cme) programme and workshop on the management of clubfoot, a congenital deformity medically known as congenital talipes equinovarus (ctev).titled “transforming tiny feet,” the event aimed to enhance the skills of postgraduate residents and orthopaedic surgeons in treating the condition, which affects about one in every 1,000 newborns globally. forty-two participants attended the programme, which included hands-on training and expert discussions.the workshop focused on the ponseti method, considered the gold standard for non-surgical correction of clubfoot. the technique involves a series of weekly plaster casts over 6-7 weeks to correct the deformity, followed by long-term bracing and the use of ctev shoes until the age of 4-5 years to prevent relapse. experts emphasised that poor compliance with bracing is a major cause of recurrence, sometimes necessitating additional casting or minor surgical procedures.participants practiced casting techniques on specialised models and discussed a wide spectrum of cases with 10 paediatric orthopaedic specialists from neighbouring states. the programme also highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and consistent follow-up care.jipmer runs a dedicated ctev clinic every wednesday to provide specialised care for affected children. organised by dr. suresh gandhi and dr. raghavendra k, the cme reflects jipmer's commitment to advancing clinical skills and improving treatment outcomes for children with clubfoot.
