MoSPI Celebrated 19th Statistics Day Marking 75 Years of National Sample Survey
new delhi: the ministry of statistics and programme implementation (mospi) celebrated the 19th statistics day on june 29, 2025, at dr. ambedkar international centre in new delhi. the event commemorated the birth anniversary of professor prasanta chandra mahalanobis, a visionary in the fields of statistics and economic planning.observed annually since 2007, statistics day aims to promote awareness—particularly among the younger generation—on the significance of statistics in socio-economic planning and national development. the theme for this year was “75 years of national sample survey”, underlining the enduring contribution of the survey in providing credible and timely data to support evidence-based governance in india.rao inderjit singh, minister of state (independent charge) for statistics and programme implementation, planning, and culture, inaugurated the event as chief guest. the inaugural session featured addresses by prof. rajeeva laxman karandikar, chairman, national statistical commission, and dr. saurabh garg, secretary, mospi.to mark the milestone, mospi released a commemorative coin and a customized 'my stamp'. the ministry also launched the goistat mobile app and released several key statistical reports, including the sustainable development goals - national indicator framework progress report 2025 and nutritional intake in india 2022-23 & 2023-24.the prestigious prof. c.r. rao national award in statistics was presented during the event, and winners of the data visualization hackathon, organised by mospi, were also felicitated.a technical session followed, featuring a short film highlighting 75 years of the national sample survey and a panel discussion on “impact of frontier technologies on official statistics”. the session was moderated by dr. shamika ravi, member, economic advisory council to the prime minister, and included eminent panelists such as dr. debasisa mohanty, shri prakash kumar, and shri amitabha tripathi.the event witnessed participation from nearly 700 delegates, including officials from central ministries, state and ut administrations, niti aayog, research institutions, domain experts, and representatives from national and international organisations. mospi shared event highlights across its social media platforms.
