UGC provides new guidelines to universities
madurai: the university grants commission (ugc) has provided the fresh new guidelines to universities on the minimum qualifications required for the appointment of teachers and with regard to their career advancement. according to official sources in the higher education sector said that ugc secretary r.k. chauhan had sent a copy of the latest regulations regarding teachers' appointment. it is stated in the letters to all the registrars that net/slet shall stand as the basic eligibility for recruitment and appointment of lecturers in university/ colleges and institutions. only those candidates obtained ph. d. degree in compliance with the ugc (minimum standards and procedure for award of ph. d. degree) regulation 2009 shall be exempt from the requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of net/slet for recruitment, dr. chauhan’s letter stated. the regulations on minimum standards / procedure for award of m. phil. and ph. d degree was also informed to the universities. all universities, institutions, deemed to be universities and colleges and institutions of national importance have been asked to fix the criteria for research supervisor both for m.phil. and ph. d. programmes. the letter also stated that a research supervisor should not be given more than eight ph.d. scholars and five m.phil. scholars at any point of time. the number of seats for m.phil. and ph.d. programmes should be decided and notified on the university website or by advertisement. thesis of research students will have to be evaluated by at least two experts, out of which one shall be from outside the state. a copy of the 'ugc minimum standards and procedure for the award of m.phil./ph. d. degree regulations 2009' has been sent to universities and affiliated institutionsall details about the university grants commission regulations are available on the website www.ugc.ac.in the communication sent to the registrars said.
