Communication as crucial as clinical skills for building doctor-patient trust: Anupriya Patel

new delhi: union minister of state for health anupriya patel said communication is as vital as clinical skills in healthcare for building trust between doctors, patients, and caregivers.she made the remarks at the launch of the book "communicate" by dr s n basu, head of obstetrics and gynaecology at max super speciality hospital and member of the national board of examinations in medical sciences (nbems) governing body. the book highlights effective communication in healthcare delivery, emphasizing human connection alongside medical expertise."in today's world, where medicine is increasingly complex, communication offers simplicity, empathy, and reassurance," patel said. she stressed that policymakers, educators, practitioners, and students must invest in communication skills to uphold patient dignity and strengthen the healing bond.the launch, held at dr ambedkar international centre, saw the presence of dr v k paul, member (health), niti aayog, and dr abhijat sheth, chairperson of nmc and president of nbems governing body.dr basu said, “while medical science has advanced, the way healthcare professionals communicate significantly influences patient outcomes, trust, and satisfaction.” the book explores doctor-patient conversations, team dynamics, crisis communication, breaking bad news, and the importance of empathy, listening, and cultural sensitivity.patel praised nbems for addressing communication in pan-india workshops and lauded dr paul's role in revolutionizing india's healthcare system.the book is published by prabhat prakashan. dr basu has received several awards, including the nari shakti award 2025, global visionary award 2025, dr apj abdul kalam award, fogsi achiever award, the hamilton bailey prize and gold medal (uk), and was named international woman of the year (cambridge, uk).
