TN to deepen AI integration in governance, says Minister Palanivel Thiagarajan

coimbatore: tamil nadu it and digital services minister palanivel thiagarajan on friday said the state is taking major strides in integrating artificial intelligence (ai) into governance to enhance efficiency, transparency, and citizen engagement.delivering the keynote address on the second day of the world innovation summit in coimbatore, the minister said the tamil nadu ai mission, launched by the state it department, rests on three core principles aimed at addressing governance challenges faced by democratic systems worldwide.he emphasized the importance of merging the government's vast databases, developing citizen-centric platforms, and creating open data ecosystems to enable innovators and startups to build impactful solutions.“governments everywhere are struggling to meet citizens' expectations. integrating ai and advanced technologies in public administration is essential to bridge that gap,” he said.thiagarajan said ai competency centres are being set up across several departments, and interactive ai workshops have already been held in 55 departments involving 272 officials. the government plans to integrate over 100 datasets and release anonymized versions for public use, offering innovators access to globally rare datasets.the state has introduced ai as part of the school curriculum from class 6 and is providing ai training for college students through the ict academy. so far, 18 crore records have been integrated, aligning information of around 4 crore individuals.ai tools have been leveraged in agriculture for improving crop data accuracy, gdp estimation, and crop insurance. applications for pest and disease monitoring, tamil-english translation, and facial recognition have also been developed. tools such as uzhavan and e-pharvai are already accessible to the public.the minister also announced that a whatsapp-based government service platform would soon be launched to deliver error-free services.he added that data integration of beneficiaries across 370 of the 520 welfare schemes has been completed, helping identify 2.3 crore families benefiting from an average of 23 government schemes. “this unified data system will greatly enhance the efficiency of welfare delivery and strengthen the connection between people and government,” he said.concluding his address, thiagarajan congratulated the organisers for the successful summit and expressed confidence that tamil nadu would soon emerge as a global model for ai-driven governance.
